Negotiating a remote salary from South Africa: what listings pay and what you keep
When a foreign company offers you a salary in dollars, it can feel like a lot in rand. But "a lot" is not a negotiating position. This guide uses two things we can actually measure, the salaries published on listings on our job board and the South African tax tables, to help you work out a sensible ask and understand what a raise is really worth to you.
Step 1: Know what similar roles pay
Our salaries page (jobs.randswitch.com/salaries) groups live listings that publish a salary by role and level. On 1 November 2026 it was built from 29 listings (out of 533 live roles), converted at $1 = R16.67, before tax. A selection:
| Role | Level | Listings | Average (US$ a year) | Range (US$) | Average in rand, a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software (general) | Mid | 3 | $137k | $60k–$220k | R189 880 |
| Software (general) | Senior | 7 | $126k | $50k–$240k | R174 921 |
| Full-stack | Mid | 1 | $40k | $30k–$50k | R55 575 |
| Full-stack | Senior | 3 | $159k | $80k–$200k | R221 141 |
| Frontend | Mid | 1 | $90k | $80k–$100k | R125 043 |
| Frontend | Senior | 1 | $115k | $80k–$150k | R159 777 |
| Mobile | Mid | 1 | $59k | $48k–$70k | R81 973 |
| Data/AI | Senior | 3 | $128k | $89k–$165k | R177 839 |
Read this with care. These samples are tiny. Many cells have one listing. One "junior DevOps" listing on the page shows US$260k, which almost certainly reflects a mislabelled level rather than typical junior pay. Companies that publish salaries are also more likely to be US firms paying US-style rates, and some of these roles may pay less to people outside the US. Use the table to see the range, not to pick a number.
Also look at the specific job's stated range, ask the recruiter for the band, and talk to people in similar roles.
Step 2: Translate offers into take-home pay
A dollar number means little until you subtract South African tax. Using our calculator (tax year 2026/27, under 65, no deductions, $1 = R16.67):
| Annual salary (US$) | Gross a month (R) | Tax a month (R) | Take-home a month (R) | Average tax rate | Marginal rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $24 000 ($2 000 a month) | R33 345 | R5 622 | R27 723 | 16.9% | 31% |
| $36 000 ($3 000 a month) | R50 017 | R11 082 | R38 935 | 22.2% | 36% |
| $40 000 | R55 574 | R13 082 | R42 492 | 23.5% | 36% |
| $60 000 ($5 000 a month) | R83 362 | R24 036 | R59 326 | 28.8% | 41% |
| $90 000 | R125 043 | R41 125 | R83 917 | 32.9% | 41% |
| $126 000 | R175 060 | R62 373 | R112 687 | 35.6% | 45% |
If you are a contractor, no tax is withheld, so you pay it yourself through provisional tax (see our remote work guide). Budget for it from the first payment.
Step 3: Know what a raise is really worth
Because higher income is taxed at higher marginal rates, a raise is worth less in your pocket than it looks.
Worked example: asking for 10% more
You are offered $60 000 a year and ask for $66 000.
- Extra gross: about R8 336 a month.
- At a 41% marginal rate, the extra take-home is about R4 918 a month.
That is still worth asking for, but if the company offers something else instead, such as a home-office or internet allowance paid as a reimbursement, or extra paid leave, compare it with R4 918, not R8 336. (Whether a given allowance is taxable depends on how it is paid; check with a tax practitioner.)
Step 4: Price in the exchange rate
A dollar salary goes up and down in rand. On our $3 000 a month page:
| Rand per dollar | Take-home a month |
|---|---|
| R14.67 | R35 087 |
| R16.67 | R38 935 |
| R18.67 | R42 775 |
Before you accept, check your budget still works if the rand strengthens by R2. If an employer offers to pay in rand instead, be careful: you lose the upside of a weaker rand, but you also lose the risk. Ask which currency, how often the rate is set and who pays transfer fees. Our calculator uses a mid-market rate; what reaches your account after bank or platform fees is usually a little less.
Step 5: Compare like with like
Two offers with the same headline number can be very different:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Employee or contractor? | Contractors usually get no paid leave, no employer pension contribution and must pay their own tax provisionally |
| Paid leave and public holidays? | Unpaid leave as a contractor is a real pay cut |
| Equipment and internet? | Laptop, data and backup power are real costs here |
| Payment method and fees? | A few percent on every payment adds up |
| Notice period and probation? | Some contracts end with very short notice |
| Retirement savings? | Without an employer fund, you may want to set up a retirement annuity. Contributions can reduce your tax, within SARS limits |
How to make the ask
- Anchor on the role, not your rand needs. "Listings for senior full-stack roles that publish pay sit between $80k and $200k" is stronger than "R50 000 is a lot for me."
- Give a range with your target at the bottom.
- Ask about the whole package (leave, equipment, currency) before agreeing to a number.
- Get it in writing, including currency and payment dates.
- Do not undersell because of location. Some companies pay location-adjusted rates and some do not. Ask how they set pay.
FAQ
Is it rude to negotiate with an overseas company? No. Most expect a counter-offer, especially in the US.
Should I quote in rand or dollars? Quote in the currency of the contract.
Why are there so few salaries in your data? Most listings don't publish pay. Only about 5% of our live listings did on 1 November 2026.
Is this financial or tax advice? No. It is general information. Speak to a registered tax practitioner about your own situation.
