Working remotely for a foreign company from South Africa

More South Africans now work for companies based in the US, UK and Europe without leaving home. On 1 November 2026 our job board at jobs.randswitch.com listed 533 live remote roles, of which 266 were marked "South Africa confirmed". This guide covers what changes when your employer or client is overseas: tax, getting paid, the exchange rate and keeping your connection and power up.

Not tax advice. This is general information based on SARS publications we read on 1 November 2026. Your situation depends on your contract, residence and other income. Speak to a registered tax practitioner or SARS before you make decisions.

1. If you live here, SARS taxes your worldwide income

South African tax residents are taxed on income from anywhere in the world. Being paid in dollars into a foreign account does not change this. The same 2026/27 tax tables apply as for someone employed locally (see jobs.randswitch.com/salary-calculator and our guide "How we calculate take-home pay").

2. Employee or contractor?

This matters more than anything else.

Employee of a foreign companyIndependent contractor
Who withholds tax?Usually nobody, unless the company runs South African payroll or uses an employer-of-recordNobody
How you pay taxProvisional tax (and annual return)Provisional tax (and annual return)
Can you deduct business expenses?Very limitedYes, expenses incurred to earn the income
Foreign employment exemptionPossibly, if you work outside SA long enoughNo
UIFUsually not, unless employed through a registered SA employerNo

Many "remote" roles are really contractor agreements. Read your contract and check what it calls you.

3. Provisional tax: paying as you go

If no employer deducts PAYE from your pay, SARS expects you to pay during the year through provisional tax. The SARS Budget Tax Guide 2026 says provisional tax applies to people who earn income other than remuneration, or remuneration from an employer who is not registered for PAYE. In broad terms you make two payments during the tax year (by the end of August and by the end of February) and you may make a top-up payment later.

You do not need to be a provisional taxpayer if your taxable income is below the tax threshold (R99 000 for under-65s in 2026/27), or if your interest, dividends, rental income and pay from an unregistered employer total R30 000 or less for the year and you do not run a business. Most full-time remote workers earn well above these levels, so they are provisional taxpayers.

Worked example: setting money aside

Say you earn $3 000 a month as a contractor with no deductions. At $1 = R16.67 (the rate on our calculator on 1 November 2026) that is about R50 017 a month. Our calculator puts tax at about R11 082 a month, or about R132 981 for the year.

ItemMonthlyYear
Gross in randR50 017R600 206
Estimated income taxR11 082R132 981
Left after taxR38 935R467 225

A simple habit: move about 22% of every payment into a separate savings account the day it arrives. That covers your estimated tax at this income, and you are not caught short when the August and February payments fall due. Business expenses (if you are a contractor) would lower the tax.

4. The foreign employment income exemption

SARS exempts some foreign employment income for residents who work outside South Africa for long enough. According to SARS:

If you work for a foreign company from your home in South Africa, you are not working outside the country, so the exemption will normally not apply. It is meant for people who physically work abroad.

5. UIF

UIF applies to employees of employers registered in South Africa. The employee pays 1% and the employer 1%, with pay capped at R17 712 a month, so the most an employee pays is R177.12 a month (SARS). A foreign company without a local presence usually does not deduct UIF, which also means you may not be able to claim UIF benefits later. If you are paid through a South African employer-of-record, check your payslip.

6. The exchange rate is part of your salary

A dollar salary moves with the rand. Our amount page for $3 000 a month shows how much:

Rand per dollarTake-home a month
R14.67R35 087
R15.67R37 015
R16.67 (1 Nov 2026)R38 935
R17.67R40 855
R18.67R42 775

A R2 move in the rand changes this take-home by roughly R3 850 a month. Our calculator uses a mid-market rate. Banks and transfer services usually pay you a little less than mid-market and may add fees, so compare what actually arrives.

7. Power and connectivity

Two practical risks for remote workers are power cuts and connection drops.

Power. Eskom reported on 30 October 2026 that it had gone 532 consecutive days without load-shedding (since 16 May 2025). However, Eskom also said "load reduction" still affected about 193 556 customers (2.7% of its customer base) in parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Local faults and municipal outages also happen. Our home-power guide at randswitch.com/power suggests that, for many renters, a router UPS (roughly R1 000 to R3 000 according to the supplier we cite) keeps the internet on through short outages.

Connectivity. ICASA's State of the ICT Sector report (March 2026) puts 4G/LTE population coverage at 99.5% and 5G at 58.0% in 2025. Only 17.4% of households had internet access at home in Stats SA's 2024 household survey, even though 82.1% had access from some location. Fibre subscriptions grew 22%. If you are moving for a remote job, check fibre or 5G availability at the exact address before you sign a lease. A mobile data backup is cheap insurance.

FAQ

Do I pay tax twice, in the US and here? Usually a foreign company does not withhold its own country's tax from a South African contractor, but some do. Where foreign tax is withheld, SARS may allow a credit. Ask a tax practitioner.

Can I use the foreign employment exemption while working from Cape Town? Normally no. It needs time physically working outside South Africa.

What rate should I use to budget? Use a rate a bit weaker for you than today's, for example R1 below the current rate, and see what still works.

Does RandSwitch Jobs charge job seekers? No. Viewing and applying is free and needs no sign-up.
