How RandSwitch Jobs finds, filters and labels remote jobs for South Africans
RandSwitch Jobs (jobs.randswitch.com) lists remote jobs that people living in South Africa can apply for. Most remote job boards are built for the US or Europe, and many "remote" jobs are only open to people in one country. This page explains, step by step, how we collect listings, what we filter out, what our labels mean and how we keep the list fresh. It is written so you can judge how far to trust a listing before you spend an evening on an application.
Where the listings come from
Most listings come from five public remote-job sources, collected through their official feeds or APIs:
| Source | Website |
|---|---|
| Jobicy | jobicy.com |
| Himalayas | himalayas.app |
| Remote OK | remoteok.com |
| Remotive | remotive.com |
| Working Nomads | www.workingnomads.com |
Companies can also post a job directly with us. Direct posts are labelled "Posted on RandSwitch Jobs".
Credit and link-back
Every aggregated listing shows where it came from ("via Himalayas", for example) and links to the original posting. The Apply button sends you to the original source unchanged. We do not rewrite apply links, add tracking codes to them or put applications behind a sign-up. Some of our sources require this credit and link-back in their terms, and we apply the same rule to all of them.
We do not submit aggregated listings to other job search engines. Structured job data (the code that lets search engines show a job in their own job panels) is only used for jobs posted directly with us.
What we collect
We collect remote jobs in four groups: software and data, virtual assistant and admin, finance and accounting, and customer support. On 1 November 2026 the board showed 533 live roles, including 103 in finance, 102 in support and 83 in virtual assistant and admin.
Step 1: Is the job open to South Africa?
A listing is only kept if its location allows South Africa. In practice that means the source says one of:
- worldwide or "anywhere";
- EMEA, Africa, or a list of countries that includes South Africa;
- South Africa itself.
We drop jobs that are only open to other countries (for example "US only" or "remote within Germany") and listings that are not in English.
Step 2: Remove what does not belong
- Duplicates. The same job often appears on several sources. We match on company and job title and keep one copy.
- Car dealer and motor-trade sales jobs. These are excluded by a fixed blocklist.
- Unrealistic salary figures. If a listing gives a yearly salary under US$5 000, we do not show that figure.
Step 3: Label how sure we are
Not every "worldwide" job really hires in South Africa. Some companies say worldwide but need you to have a US bank account or be within a few hours of US time. So every listing gets one of three labels:
| Label | What it means | How we decide |
|---|---|---|
| South Africa confirmed | The listing names South Africa, Africa, ZA or SAST, or the employer posted it directly with us | Text in the location field or description |
| Region | Open to a region that includes South Africa, or to time zones close to ours | EMEA, CET, EET or GMT/UTC +0 to +3 |
| Worldwide, check first | The source says worldwide or anywhere, but does not mention South Africa | Everything else that passed Step 1 |
On 1 November 2026 the split was 266 South Africa confirmed, 13 region and 254 worldwide. You can filter by label on the home page.
Worked example: reading a label
Say a listing reads: "Remote, Worldwide. Must overlap 4 hours with US Eastern time."
- It passes Step 1 (worldwide).
- It does not name South Africa, so it gets Worldwide, check first.
- What you should do: check the overlap. US Eastern time is 6 hours behind South Africa for much of the year, so 4 hours' overlap means working roughly 15:00 to 19:00 SAST. Decide if that suits you before applying.
Now: "Remote, EMEA. Contractors in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya welcome." This names South Africa, so it gets South Africa confirmed. Still read the contract terms, because "contractor" has tax consequences (see our guide to remote work in South Africa).
Step 4: Keep the list fresh
We collect new listings three times a day, at about 07:00, 12:00 and 17:00 South African time. A job is taken off the live list when any of these happens:
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| A source that loaded normally no longer shows it for 30 hours | The employer probably closed it |
| We have not seen it at all for 3 days | A safety net if a source is down for a while |
| It is older than 45 days | Old remote listings are usually filled |
| It has passed its stated closing date | Obvious |
Closed jobs keep a page for up to 180 days marked "closed", so old links do not just break, but you cannot apply through them.
Salaries
Only a small share of listings state pay. On 1 November 2026, 29 of 533 listings (about 5%) included a salary. Where pay is listed in US dollars we show a rand estimate at the day's mid-market rate, before tax. Our salary calculator (jobs.randswitch.com/salary-calculator) estimates take-home pay after South African tax.
Paid listings and advertising
Companies can pay to post a job directly. Paid placements that appear higher on the page are marked Sponsored. Nobody can pay for a ranking or to change the eligibility label on someone else's listing. If we ever use affiliate links, they will be labelled "Affiliate link" and never appear inside calculator results. See our editorial policy for details.
What we can't promise
- We cannot verify every employer. Never pay to apply for a job, and be wary of requests for ID numbers or banking details before a formal offer.
- Labels come from what the listing says. Employers change their minds. Always confirm eligibility on the original posting.
